Programme
FOOTPRINTS is a program that provides respite time for children with autism, so that their families can have some time apart.
This service is for children up to the age of 13 who have been diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder, Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. The group activities can include but are not limited to: free play, group play, arts and crafts, movies, puzzles, story time, homework supervision, and computer use. Individual participation in activities is strictly volunteer and encouraged by the group staff.
This service is not a structured program or any form of therapy for the child, but is intended to provide a respite for the families and/or parents - a chance for them to get away for a couple of hours.
Under the guidance and direction of a qualified coordinator, we started providing occasional respite to a few children in June 2004. Now, the program runs on a regular basis, providing access to respite time on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, and on Saturday afternoons from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm.
The care is provided in the Upper Auditorium of our church building (click here for maps), at a cost to the families of $10 for 2 hours, or $15 for 3 hours (receipts will be provided).
Opportunities To Help
This is one of the most meaningful out-reach programs this congregation has done, and we need volunteers to ensure its continued success. Can you help in one of the following ways?
Volunteer
Respite volunteers are always needed! Training will be provided, including an Introduction to Autism, First Aid, and Crisis Prevention Intervention. Each volunteer will also be required to receive a clean Police Check; the cost for the Police Check will be reimbursed.
Contact
To help, or for more information please email the program at dfunitedfootprints@rogers.com.
Alternatively, you can call the Church Office at 905.839.7271, and your message will be relayed to the programme co-ordinator.
