We Have Welcomed Reverend Deborah Foster

On Tuesday, February 18th, with open hearts we welcomed Reverend Deb Foster to the Dunbarton-Fairport United Church family.  Our period of uncertainty has drawn to a close, having taken the necessary time to assess and prioritize the needs of our congregation, and complete our search for a new minister.  In these challenging pandemic times, we are gradually coming to know Reverend Deb, and all that she brings, as she guides and supports us in our spiritual journey together. And Rev. Deb is gradually coming to know us as a community of faith, Dunbarton-Fairport United Church.

Rev. Deb has a diverse background including work as a consultant in organizational development with the government, small business and self employment, and then her years in ministry and continued learning.  Her call to ministry has increased her passion for the scriptures and their meaningfulness for today as we hold them in relationship with science - the Book of God's Word and the Book of God's Works. Rev. Deb says she is affectionately known for her shoes, but seriously known for her passion, science and for her funerals.  An odd combination perhaps.  Together we are learning and growing in faith and she is settling into the church family of Dunbarton-Fairport where we might all find rest, peace and grace for the journey.

While change can be unsettling for some, change brings opportunity for new possibilities.  As a community of faith, we will not let go of the old but, rather, we will transition to the new, in a manner that allows us to bring the best parts of ourselves forward.  And we do this with God’s guidance, and with the love and support of one another.  As the opening paragraph of our United Church creed states, “We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God, who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God.”

We continue to look forward to the journey that God has in store for us, together!

Church Family

We are a church family who seeks to live the gospel message in our lives each day. We try to imitate Jesus in his inclusive love for all people as a beacon of hope.

We are a very diverse congregation with many gifts and a huge heart. We believe in encouraging everyone to find their gifts and share them generously. Our creative worship has something for everyone. We celebrate Communion each month, baptisms upon request. We honor Creation time and bless animals. We have special celebrations where we pray and anoint those living with difficult life situations. We have wonderful prayer shawl ministry and Friendly Visitors group as part of our caring. We sing out of Voices United and More Voices song books and our choirs share wonderful anthems. We have memorial hymn services as well as other services to mark the various faith moments of the Christian journey. We believe in the words "We are not alone".

Growing in Faith and Action

We welcome people of all ages forming faith through our nursery, our children's programming as well as the Rejuvenation Council for older teens. For our Adults we are blessed with two bible study groups, a woman's book club and chances for workshops and sessions. We have a strong UCW group, and Affirming and Diversity group, eco-group and craft groups amoung the many groups here.

Living out the call to do justice

We try to embrace people with love as Jesus did. We believe we must stand in solidarity with those who find themselves at the margins. Our FOOTPRINTS 4 Autism program offers families with children living with Autism weekend respites. We support Operation Backpack for school supplies to young people. We support Joanne's House and at-risk homeless youth 16 to 24. Among the many ways we try and make a difference, we support the Massey Centre, Backdoor Mission, St. Paul's On-The-Hill food bank, First Nations issues and women's shelters.

We are not alone. We live in God's world...

Our worship services are structured to provide a variety of elements, and to involve members of the congregation as an active part of worship.
Family Focus
Because of the belief that worship is of importance to family members of all ages, there is a special segment of the Worship service dedicated to the children.
Music forms a significant part of every worship service, typically including organ and piano selections by the Music Director, choral singing by the Choir and congregational singing of hymns.
